The Stegosaurus was 26 to 30 feet long. It was about 9 feet tall. It weighed 2,000 to 4,000 pounds. It had a pointed beak like a bird. It had no teeth in the beak, but it did have small teeth on the sides of its mouth. Stegosaurus had 17 bony plates on its back. It also had spikes on the end of its tail. The spikes were 4 feet long. The Stegosaurus' front legs were shorter than the back legs. The front feet had five toes and the back feet had three toes.

The name Stegosaurus means “covered lizard” or“roof lizard.” Scientists do not know what the bony plates on the back of the Stegosaurus were for. Some think they were to help keep the Stegosaurus warmer or cooler. The first bones of a Stegosaurus were found in 1876 by M.P. Felch.
